Landschap, a 19th‑century watercolour by Andreas Schelfhout from the Netherlands, signed and sold with frame.
Description from the seller
Andreas Schelfhout (1787-1870)
Signed lower left and on verso
‘Landscape’
Sepia on paper
Stunning original large work by Andreas Schelfhout. Beautifully rendered details and a sense of atmosphere as only Schelfhout can. Works like these are scarce and not often found at auctions. The watercolor is very stylishly framed with a matching matte. Signature lower left in the past possibly slightly raised to safeguard the authenticity of the piece so the signature is not lost.
Andreas Schelfhout ranks, together with Barend Cornelis Koekkoek and Bart van Hove, among the most important painters of the Romantic School. He painted summer and winter landscapes, coastal scenes, and some seascapes. Schelfhout won important prizes at exhibitions both at home and abroad. Even during his life many museums and collectors bought his paintings. For example, King William III was a great fan of the Hague painter.
Schelfhout’s influence on the younger generation of painters has been unprecedented. Moreover, he trained many pupils. Several of them later also became well-known painters, such as Wijnand Nuijen, Johan Barthold Jongkind, Charles Leickert, Jan Willem van Borselen, Lodewijk Johannes Kleijn, Johannes Franciscus Hoppenbrouwers and Margaretha Roosenboom.
Dimensions of the watercolor: 32.5 x 26.5 cm.
Provenance:
- Veilinggebouw de Zwaan, Amsterdam
Condition:
- In good condition
• The KraWienArt Collection •
{#Great Dutch Masters}
The description and condition of the lot relate primarily to the painting itself. The antique frame is included as framing and should not be considered a new object. As is customary with antique frames, signs of age, wear, and restoration and other imperfections may be present.
