Jan Sluijters (1881–1957) – Expressive nude, ca. 1904, oil pastel on paper

Beautiful, large and rare early work from the formative period of Jan Sluijters, executed circa 1904, at the beginning of his artistic development.

In this period Sluijters combined his academic training with a growing interest in expression, color and personal eloquence. This work shows how he early on broke away from conventions and experimented with form and emotion.

The subject is rendered in oil pastel on paper, with a free and energetic line and striking use of color, foreshadowing his later modernist development. The combination of format, technique, composition and expression makes this a characteristic example of his early oeuvre.

Early works from this period are scarce and offer a special insight into the development of one of the most important Dutch modernists of the 20th century.
