Description from the seller
Animal Dream
Acrylic on canvas, 55 × 75 cm
Roberto Cafarotti, 2026
In Animal Dream the Mannerism of Incompleteness manifests itself as an existential and poetic choice.
The canvas is split into two temporal and ontological dimensions: on the left the studio remains suspended in a state of drawing, pure lines that do not pretend to close themselves, while on the right the dream erupts fully colored, dense, nocturnal.
In the center, a man with an elongated profile and a mannerist gesture closes his eyes.
In him reflect fragments of wild and domestic nature together: the leonine mane of hair, the animal skin of the jacket, the dark tail that emerges from the darkness, the cat that keeps watch. Are these reflections of nature that inhabit the dreaming man, or perhaps the man himself dreaming to be nature.
What remains unfinished (the worktable, the canvas with the horse, the lamp, the stool) is not lack, but conscious presence: it reminds that every dream, every identity, every form is always partial, always in becoming.
As in the purest expressions of Incomplete Mannerism, the work does not seek closed perfection. It prefers to leave open the wound between the possible and the realized, between man and animal, between study and the infinite. In this deliberate incompleteness lies its most intimate truth: the fragile beauty of one who dreams of being otherwise, and in dreaming it becomes, already, in part, that very thing.
