Iron (wrought) - Japan - Edo Period (1600-1868)

This tsuba (sword guard) is believed to have been made during the late Edo period.
The surface features a carved design of a flying bird.
Although much of the original finish has worn away over time, traces of gold remain in parts of the design, indicating that gold was originally used in the decoration.
It weighs 172.1g, giving it a substantial, heavy feel.
It comes with the dedicated paulownia wood box shown in the photograph.
