Description from the seller

Author: Mario Silano
Title: Intense Gaze with Peony and Gold
Technique: Oil on canvas
Dimensions: 40 x 30 cm

In this painting Mario Silano presents a fascinating half-figure portrait of a young woman occupying the center of the composition. The artist captures the figure in a three-quarter pose, with the bare shoulder exposed and the face turned forward, engaged in direct and penetrating eye contact with the viewer.
The subject, a young woman with warm amber skin, possesses distinctive and well-defined facial features. Her eyes, in a deep magnetic blue, are the focal point of the face, framed by dark, slender eyebrows. The lips are full, painted in a vivid coral shade that gives liveliness. The volume of the neck and bare shoulder is masterfully rendered, highlighting the delicacy and elegance of the form.
The dark, almost raven-black hair is gathered into an elaborate high bun, with some loose strands delicately framing the face and resting on the bare shoulder. Among the hair, at the top of the bun, stands out a large detailed silk peony flower, with petals shaded between cream, antique pink and burnt orange. Adorning the figure further, long finely crafted gold pendant earrings hang from the ears, catching light with chain and filigree details.
The woman’s clothing is rich and textural. She wears a dress with a bateau neckline, with an elaborate border of ruches and ruffles in ivory and white, embellished with gold inserts and pearls. The main part of the bodice is rendered in a vivid teal and cyan blue, with expressive and textured brushstrokes suggesting the drapery of the fabric.
The background is an abstract and textural painterly field, a mosaic of expressive brushstrokes and overlapped thick paste (impasto). The dominant tones are cool gray, white, pale blue, with touches of brown and ochre, creating a textured and rugged surface that contrasts effectively with the delicacy of the figure and her ornaments. The generous use of impasto gives depth and movement to the background, without distracting from the main subject. The artist’s signature, "M. Silano", is clearly visible in the lower left corner.
In conclusion, the work of Mario Silano fuses a careful realism, especially in the facial features, jewelry and fabrics, with a freer and more impressionist rendering of the background and the movement of the hair. The balance between the elegant and detailed figure and the abstract and textural background creates an atmosphere of timeless elegance and intriguing mystery, capturing a moment of intense visual interaction.
