You are bidding on a VERY LARGE, hand-signed knotting and painting by the German post-war artist Herbert Zangs, who is very significant. Zangs expert Helgard Müller-Jensen dates the work to 1976 and confirms this work as an original by the artist with an extensive description.

The cork-knotted pieces are among Zangs’ best-known works; they were followed by the white reliefs and wiper-like pictures. In the case of the white overpaintings, the emphasis is on the psychological mood and the act of overpainting as a symbol of covering up and sealing.

Here, Zangs creates an irregular relief with the knotted corks, and as in all knottings, he pursues the same strategy: the apparent monotony of similarity is broken by subtle interventions of paint application and color progression. This yields the unmistakable dynamism that characterizes the artist’s work.

This is a painting on fabric. The artist used white acrylic paint, overpainted the texture of the fabric and the embedded corks with opaque white. The knotted piece fascinated Zangs; the irregularity of the fabric through the embedded corks stood in stark contrast to the structured sequences he created almost simultaneously.

Excerpt from the certificate by the eyewitness and companion in the years 1961 to 1983 and holder of Galerie Rottloff in Karlsruhe, established since 1961:

"I have known Herbert Zangs and his studio since 1959 and visited many of his exhibitions in the early 60s. From 1961 to 1983 he worked in my studio and gallery. More than a hundred works were created during this time. During this period he also brought many works to my gallery that were made in other studios and also took many works out of my studio."

The painting is in very good condition. The work shows the characteristic traces of material choice and storage by the artist (use and aging traces on reused material, paint abrasion and minor losses as well as contamination from storage, small canvas waveliness and material-induced cracks in the paint layer).

This work is supplied with a certificate from the gallerist and Zangs expert, long-time companion, contemporary witness, and life partner of Herbert Zangs, Mrs. Helgard Müller-Jensen (Galerie Rottloff, Karlsruhe), who personally confirms the authenticity.
