Description
Magnificent surreal vegetal composition by Eugène Eechaut dated June 24, 1969.

In the center of a nuanced beige background, an hypnotic organic form unfolds, half flower, half fantastic creature. Petals and elongated tentacles, treated in a warm palette of oranges, browns, ochres and yellows, radiate around an intense green heart.

The contours are extremely precise, the gouache flat areas perfectly controlled, creating a depth and an almost organic sense of movement.

The work perfectly embodies Eechaut’s fantastical universe: a reinvented nature, both sensuous, unsettling and of great formal elegance. Created in 1969, it already testifies to the graphic maturity and poetic imagination that would characterize his entire career.

A particularly pure and successful piece from his vegetal and organic period.

Artist’s biography
Eugène Eechaut (Raismes, France, 1928 – Brussels, Belgium, 2019) was a Belgian artist renowned for his coherent fantastical and surreal universe.

After evening classes at the Academy of Saint-Gilles in Brussels, he largely developed his work as a self-taught artist.

His work blends Northern landscapes, nudes, abstract compositions and motifs inspired by the insect and vegetal world, all rendered with exceptional technical precision in ink, hatching, gouache and collage.

Influenced by Marcel Gromaire and Roger de La Fresnaye, he joined the Jecta Group in 1968. Since 1958, he has received numerous distinctions at the European Centre of Art and Aesthetics and regularly exhibited in major European galleries, notably at Galerie Tamara Pfeiffer in Brussels alongside René Magritte (with whom he was close), Jean Cocteau, Félicien Rops and other 20th-century masters.

His elegant graphic style and poetic surrealism, often described as “fantastic art,” make his drawings and gouaches highly sought after on the Belgian and European art market.
