VOLTA - "A Small Boat, Green Shore"

The green climbs up to occupy almost the entire canvas: thousands of round, light touches on darks, that brighten where light can pass and fade into shadows almost black. A strip of sand closes the bottom, and beneath the water it lies flat, green as well, dotted with blue reflections. There sits a tiny blue boat, with two figures barely marked by a brushstroke. The riverscape, once built to give space to the sky and place man at the center, here reverses the proportions: the shore looms, the sky is reduced to a corner, and the physical sensation of a still, humid summer remains, a pause beneath the foliage before resuming rowing.

Volta’s research moves along the line of a return—not nostalgic, but active. The great tradition of European painting is the starting point: the period each work evokes, from time to time. But the gesture by which this heritage is traversed is unequivocally contemporary. Color does not illustrate, it breathes. The brushstroke does not describe, it vibrates. What remains of the past is the deep structure — a certain idea of the body, of space, of light — while the surface is all-present, all alive. Volta does not quote, he restitutes: his compositions seem to emerge from a shared cultural memory, brought to light with different eyes.
