Description from the seller
Two walls of foliage close in on a vertical crack of sky, and there inside, at mid-height, a white cloud passes, still as if the wind had forgotten it. Higher up, a point of the moon watches over it. Everything else is touch against touch: deep blues, dark greens, sparks of gold emerging among the branches like fireflies held back. Below, a fountain gathers the water and a few doves descend to drink, their pale wings in the dark. The painting, elsewhere treated as ornamental weaving, static and decorative, here moves: every blot is laid on with a throw, the pigment remains raised, the surface vibrates. Not a garden viewed from outside, but a place one has already entered, when the eye begins to grow used to it.

Volta’s research moves along the path of a return—not nostalgic, but active. The great tradition of European painting is the starting point: the period that each work evokes, in turn. But the gesture with which this heritage is traversed is unequivocally contemporary. Color does not illustrate, it breathes. The brushstroke does not describe, it vibrates. What remains of the past is the deep structure—a certain idea of the body, of space, of light—while the surface is entirely present, entirely alive. Volta does not quote, it returns: his compositions seem to emerge from a shared cultural memory, brought to light with different eyes.
