With this square-format work, Medsan reinterprets Jean-Honoré Fragonard's Le Verrou, a libertine masterwork of the 18th century, by substituting Darth Vader for the lover who pushes the bolt, while a young woman clings to him in a room soaked with red draperies.

The treatment mirrors the original’s rococo finish: warm, theatrical oil paint, flamboyant drapery, a disordered bed, a flickering candle, and dramatic chiaroscuro. The composition faithfully reuses Fragonard’s famous gesture — the arm extended toward the lock — but the dark armor and the Sith lord’s mask replace the gallant, in a striking contrast with the scene’s softness. The cartouche メドサン signs the work.

The piece plays with the telescoping of romance and pop myth. By slipping the coldest villain in cinema into a heated seduction scene, Medsan humorously diverts the original painting’s romantic tension, between passion, power, and mischief.

A bold, theatrical piece, ideal for adding a touch that is both classical and offbeat to a contemporary interior of a collector who loves old painting and Star Wars culture.
