The poon is a sailing cargo ship from the South Dutch waters. It is closely related to the North Dutch tjalk. It existed from the 13th to the 20th century, and some examples were even built in iron. The poon is somewhat shorter, wider and more angular in the sterns than the tjalk. It has more depth (draft), and on the berghouten (which are never straight) it is narrower than on the flat. The sterns are curved, with a backward-pointing tip. Because of this it has a pleasing appearance, and it is often depicted in paintings as a jewel of the Dutch waters. The larger ones, especially the Zeelandic poon, which served as a ferry ship, were often beautifully painted in fresh colours, which was exceptional for most of the sailing inland ships.
