Description from the seller

4 pages of medieval miniatures (3 are double-sided and 1 is single-sided) in parchment.

These are cosmological and astronomical diagrams taken from the Breviari d'Amor, a famous encyclopedic work in verse written in Occitan (Old Provençal) by the troubadour and Franciscan monk Matfre Ermengau (died in 1322). The sheets illustrate the medieval conception of the universe, showing the arrangement of the planets, the movement of the sun, the zodiac, and the natural elements according to the theological-astronomical science of the time.

The Breviari d'Amor was conceived by Ermengaud to demonstrate how the entire universe and the laws of nature are governed by Divine Love. The work blends the spirit of the troubadour Provençal lyrical tradition with the rigorous scholastic and scientific theology of the Middle Ages.

These manuscripts were crucial in the Middle Ages for understanding the link between astrology, medicine, and philosophy.

The four cards faithfully reproduce some of the most significant miniatures, allowing appreciation of their artistic quality, attention to detail, and the complexity of the ornamental apparatus.

The sheets come from the disassembly of a high-quality facsimile volume (AyN of 2003), in very good overall condition with gold parts and intact images.
Measurements of each sheet: 34.5 cm x 24.8 cm.

Shipping will be carried out with specific materials and insured for the sale value.
