Description from the seller
Fish Service Art Deco, Onnaing Faience, France, 1920-1930
Description:
This service consists of 7 pieces with a fine aquatic design:
• 6 large plates (25.5 x 27.7 cm)
Each piece is molded in relief to fit the organic silhouette of a fish. The rim of the plate ends in a stylized head with large round eyes encircled with platinum and on the side fins finely ribbed. On the opposite side, the wing ends in a flared, striated tail. The outer edge is delicately outlined by a geometric relief frieze resembling a weave, enhanced by a patinated silver border.
• 1 large tureen with a matching tray (26 x 13 cm)
The body of the tureen forms an elegant receptacle with dynamic contours evoking a shell or foam. The lid is sculpted in the round as a fish with individually incised scales, equipped with a spiny dorsal fin with pink powdery reflections and a tapered tail. The oval pedestal in relief is adorned with a delicate leafy and marine decoration.
Subtle touches of powder pink and silver edging that highlight the reliefs.
A modeling work typical of the interwar period, combining the naturalistic whimsy of Art Nouveau with the stylized rigor of Art Deco.
Condition:
The set is in very good overall condition, with no cracks or chips. There are only some tiny and traditional firing pinpricks from the original production and very light scattered signs of use on two plates, bearing witness to its authenticity and era (see last photo).
The manufacture’s stamp is clearly visible on the back of the tureen.
