Eugene Robert Richee (1896–1972) was an influential American photographer of the classical Hollywood era, best known for his iconic studio portraits for Paramount Pictures. As the studio's chief portrait photographer, he substantially shaped the visual image of numerous film stars during the 1920s and 1930s.
Particularly famous are his photographs of Marlene Dietrich, which Richee staged with lighting that was unusual for the time. His images are characterized by strong chiaroscuro, precisely placed highlights, and sculptural modeling of the face. This technique conferred upon Dietrich's appearance a cool, enigmatic elegance and played a decisive role in her status as a style icon.
