Joseph Drapell is a Czech-Canadian abstract painter born on March 13, 1940 in Humpolec. Fleeing the totalitarian regime of his homeland, he emigrated to Canada in 1966. He then studied art at Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan from 1968 to 1970. Inspired by Georgian Bay, there he developed his distinctive pictorial technique. He uses a large rotary tool to spread acrylic paint in thick layers. Internationally recognized, he is one of the founding members of the New New Painters.

Drapell's aim was to contribute to the art of painting, rather than simply earning a living as an artist. Between 1968 and 1970, he studied with several visiting artists and lecturers at the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan. It is there that he began to develop his “compression technique,” in reaction to Morris Louis's paintings.

“My painting did not begin with the intention of restoring what art had lost during the postmodern period — not at all. It is rather my free, idealistic and anticonformist character that pushed me to build myself without worrying too much about trends or the fact of being ‘in step with the times’.
