Xavier Carbonell Serra (Olot, Girona, June 4, 1942 – Olot, August 3, 2015) was a Catalan painter and draftsman, considered one of the most representative artists of the Olot artistic school in the second half of the 20th century. Son of sculptor Lluís Carbonell i Colom, he grew up in a environment deeply linked to the visual arts, beginning at a very young age in drawing and painting under his father's influence. He later completed his training at the School of Fine Arts in Olot.
In his early years he mainly cultivated landscape, especially the corners of Garrotxa, as well as urban and architectural scenes. Over time his pictorial language evolved toward a more personal body of work, characterized by refined interiors, still lifes, and above all, female figures wrapped in a poetic and decorative atmosphere. The influence of Symbolism and, in particular, Gustav Klimt, is perceptible in many of his compositions, where color, light, and textures take on a prominent role.
His painting stands out for intense chromaticism, diaphanous lighting, and a pronounced lyrical sensibility. Carbonell's works convey serenity and elegance through a combination of figurative and decorative elements that give his compositions a style that is easily recognizable. Throughout his career he produced more than 1,700 paintings and regularly exhibited in galleries in Spain, France, the United States, and other countries.
His work is part of prestigious public and private collections, including the Garrotxa Museum in Olot, the Palace of Fine Arts in Mexico, and the International Olympic Committee headquarters in Lausanne. After his death in 2015, the City Council of Olot dedicated a major retrospective exhibition to him in recognition of his artistic career and his contribution to contemporary Catalan painting.
