BIOGRAPHY OF THE ARTIST

Born in Barcelona in 1952 and belonging to the generation that helped foster the cultural transition in Spain resulting from the shift from dictatorship to democracy that occurred in the mid-1970s. He played a leading role in the original comic movement that began in the early 1980s and was the founder of emblematic magazines such as Star and Cairo. In his early career as an artist he was perceived as a cultural agitator and throughout his career he has exhibited his works in galleries located in Spain and France, being well known among the specialized circles of Europe and the United States.

Like the artists of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, such as Sorolla, Zuloaga, Vázquez Díaz or Picasso, he works on the culture of his country and fully trusts in the relevance of the "Marca España".

Going into detail, he left university in 1972 to found what would become the first underground comics magazine in the Spanish state, "Star". Author of several comic albums, magazines, and collaborator on radio programs when presenting animated drawings, dedicated to comics between 1972 and 1989. In 1989 he began painting thanks to Art Supermarket. In 1992 he moved with his family to Vigneux de Bretagne, France. His first exhibition in Madrid in 1995, where he presented themes that seduce you, The Bulls and popular Madrid. In 1999 he settled with his family in Villanueva de la Cañada, Madrid. He has contributed to the newspaper ABC from 1989 to 2002, won the Max Award for Performing Arts in 1999, author of posters, lithographs, serigraphs, performances and numerous exhibitions. In 1995 he first presented his Taurine work at the Jorge Alcolea Gallery in Madrid. He has published 10 albums, the last “Idilio, notas de Fortuny” in 2017, published by the Prado Museum. In 2012 he drew and wrote «Speak Low», his first graphic novel. In 2017, the “Prado Museum” published his book «Idilio» and exhibited his work in the most visited museum in Spain. In October 2019 he painted live before an audience a large work of 300x1000 cm at the National Museum of Catalonia (MNAC), in Barcelona.

Interested in Urban Landscapes, Bullfighting scenes, and Portraits. To date, Montesol’s works are present in the art market and among collectors in Europe, the United States, and the Middle East.
