Description from the seller
Jugendstil Art Nouveau Copper Relief "Taming the Steed" - Mythological Scene, Possibly Chiron - Signed O.B., c. 1920
*Description*
An exceptional Jugendstil / Art Nouveau mythological copper relief titled "Taming the Steed", circa 1920.
The panel depicts a powerful scene of a man taming a rearing wild horse. This motif is highly symbolic of the Art Nouveau period and represents the triumph of intellect, reason and civilization over raw nature and instinct.
*Mythological Attribution*
The scene can be interpreted in two ways, both very typical for Jugendstil symbolism:
1. *Chiron the Centaur*: The wise centaur Chiron, tutor to Greek heroes like Achilles, often depicted teaching man to master the horse. He symbolizes wisdom, mentorship and the civilizing force.
2. *Heracles and the Horses of Diomedes*: A classic theme of heroic strength and dominance over nature.
