Max Hartmann & Paul Koch - Ashtray (2) - Cast brass

Set of an antique, richly decorated brass matchbox holder on a foot (or pyrogène), made by Max Hartmann, and an antique brass presenting dish (or vide-poche) with a central heart-shaped handle, made by Paul Koch.

Characteristic of both objects are the floral motifs and ornaments and strong stylistic features of metalwork from the late 19th or early 20th century. The match holder has relief patterns of floral motifs, dragons and torches and is marked on the underside with the maker’s name Max Hartmann and number 13622. The smaller dish shows a relief of floral motifs and ornaments, combined with a prominently formed handle finished with stylized animal and organic elements on either side. The dish is also bottom-stamped with the maker’s name Paul Koch and number 13594.
