Description

A striking piece of vintage French barware from Christofle⁠, combining a sculptural silver-plated Filets ice/champagne bucket with a pair of Malmaison ice tongs and their Christofle presentation box.

The bucket is particularly characteristic of the restrained modernism Christofle explored during the post-war period. Rather than relying on elaborate ornament, its tapered cylindrical body is structured by a succession of horizontal raised bands, while two geometric side grips give the piece an architectural silhouette.

Importantly, this identification is supported directly by Christofle’s own Vintage archive. Christofle identifies its Filets silvered ice bucket as a design created in the 1950s, describing the restrained form and linear decoration as representative of the modernist ideas of that decade and their relationship with Bauhaus-derived functional design. Christofle gives the archived Filets bucket a height of 13.5 cm, closely corresponding to the present example.

The accompanying tongs provide a deliberate classical counterpoint. They are in Christofle’s celebrated Malmaison pattern, recognizable by their symmetrical Empire-style palmette/leaf ornament and fine decorative border. Christofle describes Malmaison as one of the house’s historic Empire-style patterns, named after the Château de Malmaison, associated with Napoleon Bonaparte and Empress Joséphine. The characteristic decoration derives from palm and lotus-leaf motifs inspired by Antiquity.

Identification & marks

The underside of the bucket is clearly engraved “Christofle” and “FRANCE”, flanked by Christofle manufacturer/quality marks, all photographed in detail.

These marks are significant. According to Christofle’s own hallmark archive, the company’s earlier balance hallmark was used from 1844 until 1935. From 1935 onward, Christofle adopted the manufacturer’s mark incorporating the chess knight and the initials OC for Orfèvrerie Christofle. The marks visible on this bucket therefore accord with post-1935 Christofle production and are consistent with the circa-1950s attribution of the Filets model.

The Malmaison tongs are separately marked Christofle / France and carry their own maker/quality stamp, visible in the detailed photographs.

Measurements of the bucket have been taken directly from the present object and are documented photographically rather than copied from a catalogue.

Condition

The bucket is presented in clearly used vintage condition with substantial age- and use-related surface wear.

Most importantly, there is extensive and uneven loss/wear to the silver-plated finish, particularly across the lower horizontal bands, together with darkened areas, tarnish/oxidation, spotting and numerous surface scratches. The interior likewise shows substantial tarnish, discoloration, scratching and wear from use, particularly across the base.

The underside shows extensive surface wear, scratches, tarnishing and areas of discoloration while retaining clearly identifiable Christofle marks.

This wear has deliberately not been concealed or digitally restored in the photographs. Close-up images of the exterior, interior and underside are included so bidders can assess the condition accurately.

The Malmaison tongs are considerably better preserved than the bucket, retaining crisp decorative detail and a bright silver-plated appearance, although they also show normal surface marks, light scratching and signs of previous use.

The green Christofle box shows storage wear, including marks and wear around its edges and corners.

Why the combination is interesting

What makes the lot visually compelling is the dialogue between two different sides of Christofle design.

The Filets bucket represents the company’s cleaner mid-century vocabulary: functional, architectural and almost industrial in its reliance on repeated horizontal lines. Christofle itself describes the Filets bucket as characteristic of 1950s modernism.

The Malmaison tongs, by contrast, draw deliberately on the symmetry and classical ornament of the French Empire tradition. Christofle continues to describe Malmaison as one of its emblematic Empire-style collections.

Together they form an attractive and fully usable piece of French luxury barware, but equally an interesting display object for collectors of Christofle, French silver plate and twentieth-century tableware.

The Filets bucket combines unmistakable mid-century French restraint with a strongly architectural silhouette, while the Malmaison tongs introduce one of Christofle’s most recognizable classical patterns. The bucket’s substantial wear should be regarded honestly as part of its condition, not disguised; yet the design, documented Christofle marks and surviving original character still give the ensemble considerable decorative presence. A characterful acquisition for a Christofle collection, sophisticated bar setting or interior where genuine vintage objects are preferred to pristine reproductions.
