Description:
This unusual decorative ornament is a Japanese erotic-themed object inspired by shunga imagery, combining a playful exterior with a boldly sculptural interior scene.
The box is square in form and built in several stacked sections, painted in vivid red, green, cream, and blue tones. The exterior is decorated with stylized botanical and geometric motifs, while the lid is finished in deep red and ornamented with small circular patterns. A charming three-dimensional cat figure forms the finial on the top, giving the closed box an almost whimsical appearance.

When looking inside, the interior reveals a highly detailed erotic relief composition depicting an intimate couple, modeled in high relief and individually hand-painted. The figures are rendered with traditional Japanese hairstyles and textile patterns, suggesting inspiration from Edo-period ukiyo-e and shunga, although the object itself appears to be a later decorative interpretation rather than an Edo-period work. The contrast between the innocent cat-topped exterior and the concealed erotic scene gives the piece a humorous and theatrical character.
