Edition dated 1610 printed in Cologne by the printer Antonius Hierat of the celebrated work "Historiae Sacrae" by the Roman historian Sulpicius Severus (c. 360 – c. 420).
The work appears in the seventeenth-century reprint based on the editions printed in the 1570s of the XVIth century, following the Counter-Reformation tradition.
The text contains the Historiae Sacrae in two books, which recounts the history of the world from the creation of humanity to Stilicho’s first consulship in 400 AD, with a special focus on the events of the Jewish people and the Christian Church, particularly related to persecutions and heresies up to the turning point under Emperor Constantine.
This edition includes the author’s other famous work, namely the so-called "Vita Martini", a work dedicated by the author to his master, Saint Martin of Tours, of whom he would become a disciple and biographer. Inside it is divided into Epistolae and Dialogi.
In the last part there is, with its own title page, the addition curated by the humanist and erudite Pietro Galesini (c. 1520 – c. 1590) to the Historiae Sacrae, entitled precisely Notationes in Historiam Sulpicii Severi, which constitutes an attempt to clarify complex chronological or geographical passages and to correct possible historical inaccuracies of the ancient original text.
The binding in excellent condition is full parchment with a blind-printed refined fleur-de-lis motif in gold across the entire surface; all the book edges show a fine gilding still present in almost all of them.
Some wormholes affect the pages from the flyleaf to page 110, at least two pages have tears.
Ancient loose sheet with library notes inserted into the flyleaf, some inscriptions and ownership notes on the first and last leaves: "E. Chevallier 1670" and "Hoc libro utitur Eustachius Chevallier".
A fine small-format work of a classical text, here offered in a edition with a prestigious binding.
