Description from the seller
The espresso coffee service is produced by the Italian company Richard Ginori at its Doccia facilities near Florence. This set is the Antico Doccia Corona model and includes:
- 12 espresso cups
- 12 saucers
- 1 milk jug
- 1 coffee pot
- 1 sugar bowl
It is a set of rare beauty that represents the flagship of Richard Ginori's production.
The Ginori Porcelain Manufactory of Doccia distinguished itself as one of the most eminent porcelain factories in Europe. Its founding dates back to 1737, thanks to the initiative of Marquis Carlo Ginori, at his villa in Doccia, now part of Sesto Fiorentino. The ownership and management of the manufactory remained in the hands of Carlo Ginori’s descendants until 1896, when a merger with the Società Ceramica Richard of Milan took place.
The artistic evolution of the Doccia Manufactory appears particularly complex and reflects the various historical and cultural events that characterized Tuscany for about one hundred and fifty years, from the decline of the last Medici to the era when Florence became the capital.
In the early years, the Ginori factory in Doccia, similar to the Viennese Du Paquier, did not consistently adopt a mark, unlike Meissen. However, there were several attempts in this direction. Examples of such attempts include the use of the Cupola of the Florence Cathedral, a symbol already associated with Mugello Medici porcelain, and the eight-pointed star. The latter element represents the three stars of the Ginori family crest, united with the dome. Although these initiatives suggest an intention to introduce a mark, there is no conclusive proof that demonstrates the will of Marquis Carlo and his successor Lorenzo.
Under the leadership of Lorenzo Ginori and on Saint Laurent’s advice, it was repeatedly considered to place a mark on products from the Doccia ovens. This was to prevent counterfeiting of porcelains sold in Naples, often decorated roughly, and to distinguish their products from those of rivals, a common practice among many manufactories of the era.
It was only under Carlo Leopoldo Ginori’s management that a more defined mark was adopted: the incused asterisk, documented from 1780, probably a simplification of the three stars of the family crest. During the same period, the asterisk also appears painted in gold or red over glaze, up to the first half of the nineteenth century, alternated with numerals painted or incised letters such as P (prima scelta) and F. Subsequently, and mainly on earthenware, the mark "GINORI" was impressed until about 1840, while on porcelain the crowned N appeared, thanks to the acquisition of models from the Real Fabrica Ferdinandea and the right to reproduce its mark. In the second half of the nineteenth century, between 1850 and 1890, we find a G impressed within a vertical lozenge or the designation Ginori painted within an oval. In the last decades, variants "Manifattura Ginori" in an oval centered by a star, painted in black, blue, green and red were introduced.
