Description from the seller

Antique Orientalist terracotta bust – 19th century
Fascinating Orientalist terracotta bust depicting an elderly Moor with a turban, datable to the second half of the 19th century, a period when the taste for the East deeply influenced sculpture and European decorative arts.
The work stands out for the extraordinary expressive force of the face: the deep wrinkles, the long richly modeled beard, and the turban, crafted with great plastic sensitivity, give the bust a strong realistic character. The surface preserves evident traces of handwork, highlighting the materiality of terracotta and the sculptor's gesture.
Orientalism was one of the main artistic movements of the nineteenth century. After the Napoleonic campaigns in Egypt and the intensification of travel to North Africa and the Middle East, European artists and collectors developed a strong interest in Eastern cultures, customs, and people. Busts like this became sought-after decorative elements for aristocratic homes and art collections.
