Description from the seller
Large hand-painted Terracotta Plate with an Archaeological theme – Early 20th century – Ø 49 cm
Description
Impressive and scenographic large terracotta plate, entirely hand-decorated, dating to the early decades of the 20th century, crafted in the archaeological style inspired by the figurative ceramics of the ancient Greek world.
The piece stands out for its remarkable dimensions, with a diameter of 49 cm, a depth of about 8 cm, and a weight of 4.7 kg.
The center features a fascinating figurative composition of a classical subject, with two figures facing each other, rendered in the characteristic red, white, and black tones. The scene is framed by an elegant Greek meander and a wide red-orange band.
Of particular impact is the broad lip, richly decorated with a sequence of zoomorphic figures and stylized botanical motifs, painted in black on the warm natural terracotta background. The alternation of figures and large dotted motifs creates a continuous decoration of notable graphic strength.
The surface shows a beautiful antique patina, with crazing, abrasions, wear, and losses of the painted decoration that attest to the object's history and emphasize its archaeological character. Close-up photographs document the conservation status accurately.
The back, left largely in natural terracotta, preserves clear traces of the manufacturing process and features an old hanging system using a metal wire, allowing the plate to be displayed on the wall.
A decorative object with great stage presence, particularly suitable for a ceramics collection, classic interior, study, library, or as an important wall element.
Characteristics: hand-painted terracotta; early 20th century; diameter 49 cm; depth about 8 cm; weight 4.7 kg. No signatures or marks are visible on the parts examined.
Conditions: shows signs of age, wear to the polychromy, abrasions, crazing, and small superficial losses, as detailed in the photographs. The images are an integral part of the description.
The plate will be professionally packed with particular care, considering its size and weight.
