AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Beautiful Wainscot chair.

Circa 1640–1660.
Elegant armrests stand out.
Beautiful deep patina and wear in the oak.
In the backrest we can clearly see that the wood is quarter-sawn.

Little restoration: only at the bottom is there ever been a reinforcement added — but long ago — and a single small piece to keep the legs at the same length.
For this great age in very good condition.
And still suitable to sit on, although it is more than just a utilitarian object.

Wainscot is perhaps an English corruption of wagenschot.
Wagenschot is the Dutch term for what we see in the grain when the wood is quarter-sawn.
Then the vessels of the bast flow from the sapwood toward the heartwood come into view.
The 'g' was pronounced very softly at that time and could easily be slurred away in England. The Dutch had already sold a lot of sawn timber to England in the 15th century. Hence.
