Italian-made vintage marble chessboard dating from 1990–2000, in good condition, 40 × 40 cm and about 6.7 kg, featuring a black perimetral edge and a lapidary playing surface with varied natural stones including malachite.
Description from the seller
Vintage Marble Inlay Chessboard – 40 × 40 cm – 20th Century
Magnificent and scenographic vintage chessboard in solid marble, featuring a refined playing surface created by juxtaposing numerous varieties of natural marbles and hard stones, selected for color, grain, and contrast.
The playing field is composed of 4 × 4 cm squares, in which glossy black surfaces alternate with stone inserts in a wide range of colors: reds, pinks, yellows, greens, grays, and browns create a rich and unique whole. Particularly fascinating is the malachite square, instantly recognizable by its spectacular concentric bands of intense green.
Each insert exhibits the natural veins, inclusions, and chromatic variations inherent to the stone: this very heterogeneity is the main aesthetic merit of the object, transforming the chessboard into a true decorative piece for the table.
The wide black glossy perimeter frame gives the board an elegant and monumental appearance, while the light-colored edge precisely delineates the playing field.
The chessboard measures 40 × 40 cm and weighs a substantial ~6.7 kg, a testament to the solidity and heft of the structure. The underside is fully lined with black felt to protect the surfaces on which it rests.
Complete with a set of wooden pieces in two contrasting tones, but undoubtedly the magnificent stone playing surface is the real protagonist of the ensemble.
Condition
Vintage item with normal signs of wear and age. A prior repair at one corner of the chessboard is noted, clearly documented in the photographs. The repair is stable and, in normal overall view, only subtly evident; it becomes more noticeable when viewed under certain light reflections and is visually absorbed by the natural veining and wide color variation of the surface.
The chessboard presents as solid, stable, and highly impactful aesthetically.
Dimensions: 40 × 40 cm
Square size: 4 × 4 cm
Weight: approximately 6.7 kg
Materials: marble, hard stones and wood
Period: second half of the 20th century / vintage
Splendidly left on permanent display on a large living room table, a console, or a gaming table. The combination of glossy black, malachite, and polychrome marbles allows it to fit into both classical spaces and contemporary eclectic interiors, where it can be used as an authentic sculptural decor object.
Photographs are an integral part of the description and document details, materials, and state of conservation.
