Memories from Algiers is a travelogue from 1865 by the Dutch merchant and writer Daniël Hartevelt, based on his stay in North Africa.
Background and Publication
• Author: Daniël Hartevelt (1824–1896), born in Brielle. (biography in Jaarboek van de Maatschappij der Nederlandse Letterkunde, 1897)
• Publication year: 1865 (published by D.A. Thieme in Arnhem).
• Series: Appeared as No. 56 in the popular Guldens Edition.
• Origin: The texts first appeared as a feuilleton in the Arnhemsche Courant.
Contents and Style
• Experience: The material was collected in the winter of 1862 to 1863 on the northwestern coast of Africa.
• Style: Entertaining and loosely written, characteristic of his strong personality.
