Description from the seller

The Last Move

What remains of a work when there is no one left to inhabit it?

The spectator immediately recognizes Diego Velázquez's Las Meninas. His gaze instinctively seeks the figures. Yet they are no longer there.

He feels a lack.

And it is precisely this absence that becomes the true subject of the work.

The moving boxes are not mere moving boxes. They become the transport cases for our collective memory. The fragile labels, the inscriptions, the wrappings evoke a time when even our heritage seems able to be moved, stored, or forgotten like an ordinary object.

We protect objects more than the memories they contain.

By making the characters disappear, the work reveals what had been invisible up to then: absence. An absence that speaks as much of Velázquez as of our era, where images scroll by faster than they imprint themselves on our memory.

Because it is not the artworks that disappear first.

It is the gazes we cast upon them.
