(XVIII Nuremberg ) - Strongbox - polychromed alms box - Wrought iron

Superb and rare alms box (Opferstock or Almosenkasten) made of riveted sheet iron, of Nuremberg origin, dating from the 18th century.

This specimen, of rectangular parallelepiped shape, features a hinged lid with a rectangular slot for coins and banknotes, a central wrought-iron latch allowing the passage of a padlock, and a wide rear mounting plate drilled with three holes for secure wall hanging. The edges of the lid are cut into characteristic sawtooth teeth, while small iron feet support the lower corners. The whole is entirely riveted, according to the typical techniques of Nuremberg production of the period.

The original decoration, still present after centuries, consists of a polychrome folk painting on a dark background (blue-green to black). On the front face, a vase or basket striped with orange-brown tones contains a bouquet of pink flowers with green stems and leaves, accompanied by shoulder motifs in the shape of bells or falling fruits. The sides also bear stylized floral elements, in the naïve and colorful taste typical of the Nuremberg workshops during the Renaissance and the early Baroque era.

Despite the centuries that have passed, it presents itself in a remarkable state: beautiful patina, solid and intact construction, natural wear without major alterations, and the polychromy still present.

Originating from Nuremberg in Germany, this rare object combines strong historical interest, testimony to Nuremberg folk art, and genuine decorative character. It would be perfectly suited to a collection of liturgical objects or antique wrought ironwork, or would bring an authentic presence to an interior with a historical and rustic ambiance.
