Description:
This Bible was completed in the year 1630, i.e., in the midst of the devastating Thirty Years’ War. Despite the economic hardship and the turmoil of war of that era, the printers in Strasbourg achieved a technological masterwork. For the suffering population, the magnificent images in this dark time offered solace and spiritual support.
Merian employed masterful perspectives and wide landscapes that gave the biblical scenes an unprecedented depth. He often clothed the figures in garments of the 17th century and depicted the settings in the style of contemporary German castles. His illustrations break with the rigid art of the past and fascinate with enormous dynamism and emotional gesture. (cf. Google)
