The subject of this auction is a large-format oil painting on canvas depicting Vladimir Lenin in a dark suit and tie against a red background, in keeping with the canon of Soviet Socialist Realism.
The painting is unsigned, a tactic frequently employed by artists of that period who did not want their names associated with this type of work. They were often forced to accept such commissions.
The canvas bears clear signs of aging, cracking, paint loss, and repairs. Its current condition only reinforces the sense that one is dealing with an authentic witness to history. The painting was stored in a dry room and shows no signs of mold or a musty odor (the black and white marks on the back of the canvas are paint). The painting was purchased at an antique market in Kraków, Poland.
The painting will be carefully packed and shipped rolled up.
