Description from the seller
An extraordinary handbook on European nobility, combining law, history, heraldry, and courtly culture into a unique reference work.
First and only edition. Publisher: Liège, Guillaume Henry Streel, 1680. 416 pages, later half-leather binding, marble-paper endpapers, FOLIO 31 x 21 cm.
--------------------------------------
An exceptional work on the legal and social history of European nobility in the late 17th century. Herman François de Malte not only treats the legal status of the nobility before the courts, but also combines legal discussions with historical, heraldic, and social digressions.
Among other topics, it covers the origin and nature of the nobility, coat-of-arms and seal law, rank questions, feudal and inheritance law, wills, guardianship, marriage and the legitimation of children, as well as the special privileges and duties of the nobility. Moreover, the author devotes attention to numerous aspects of noble life, such as hunting, horses, carriages, tournaments and games, court representation, and questions of ceremony and class honor.
The numerous historical examples, references to ancient and contemporary legal literature, and the inserted treatises on heraldry make the work a significant source for legal, cultural, and aristocratic history.
With the heraldic ex libris of the Bibliotheca Elseghemensis of the Belgian noble family de Ghellinck d'Elseghem Vaernewyck, bearing the motto "Laet Vaeren Nydt". The family was one of the most important Belgian bibliophiles of the late 19th and early 20th centuries; numerous books from the Elseghem castle library are documented by this ex libris.
--------------------------------------
Clean and complete with only minor age-related signs of wear. Overall a very well-preserved copy.
