Biography:

Albert Terken (1919, Sydney – Profondeville, 1991) is a renowned Belgian painter. He was born in Sydney, Australia, but lived and worked largely in Belgium. His style is characterized by a vigorous brush and knife technique, combined with a striking vivid and pure coloring.

Terken studied at the Sint-Lucas Academy in Schaerbeek and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Brussels, where he studied under renowned masters such as Hendrik Van Haelen and Alfred Bastien.

His oeuvre includes landscapes around Brussels and in France, as well as portraits, nude studies, dynamic sport and horse scenes (such as his well-known Fantasias and Les Cavaliers), as well as complex figurative compositions such as Don Quixote and La Fuite and Égypte.

Terken was included in leading art encyclopedias, including Bénézit and De Belgische Beeldende Kunstenaars.

He was also a plein-air painter. He held numerous solo exhibitions, such as in the Town Hall of Schaerbeek, Maison des Artistes in Anderlecht, the Musée Molière in Paris, and in the cultural centers of Namur, Neder-Over-Heembeek and Kortrijk. The City of Brussels paid him official tribute in 2017 with a special exhibition to celebrate the thousand-year anniversary of the city.

Posthumously, he received international recognition in 1997 with the Special Distinction Award at the International Art Biennale of Malta.

Terken's works are included in the Belgian State collection and in the municipal collections of Schaerbeek (including the painting "Spanish Scene") and Anderlecht.
