Description from the seller
Small ceramic vase signed Jean Gerbino – Vallauris, made around the 1950s-1960s. This creation illustrates the characteristic know-how of the master ceramicist through his famous technique of mosaic of colored clays, integrated into the body. Its elegant baluster silhouette, with a tightened neck and flared rim, highlights a richly graphic decor.
The vase features a composition entirely made from assemblies of natural polychrome clays. The nuances of ochre, brown, red and beige marbled tones alternate with a mid-band frieze of ivory diamonds punctuated by black, enhanced by fine blue-toned motifs and black-and-white wavy lines. Each face reveals a different combination of these elements, bearing witness to the unique character of this technique.
The overall condition is pristine. No chips, cracks, restorations or repairs to report. The hollow inscription “Gerbino – Vallauris” is present on the base and perfectly legible.
Based in Vallauris after a career starting in Algiers, Jean Gerbino (1876-1966) developed from the 1930s a personal technique consisting of assembling colored clay pastes before throwing, creating a definitive decor without the need for painted glaze. During the 1950s, his workshop fully contributed to the artistic revival of Vallauris, alongside the city’s great ceramicists, while maintaining an immediately recognizable aesthetic identity based on color, geometry and mastery of material.
Dimensions are:
- Height: 9 centimeters,
- Width: 6.2 centimeters,
- Upper diameter: 5.2 centimeters,
- Base diameter: 4.1 centimeters,
- Weight: 150 grams.
The vase will be carefully packaged and securely shipped promptly. In-person pickup and combined delivery are available. Photos are part of the description.
