Unran Glaze Vase by Taimei Morino (Japan), stoneware, 16.3 cm high by 8.8 cm diameter, produced in the 1980s–1990s, in excellent condition, with the original tomobako and signed cloth wrapper.
Description from the seller
A striking "Unran" (cloud-blue) glazed vase by Taimei Morino, a Member of the Japan Art Academy and one of the most highly decorated ceramic artists working in Japan today. The vase's luminous turquoise-blue surface is interrupted by a bold, unglazed band running from the shoulder to the base, where speckled ash-toned clay breaks through — a striking interplay of glazed and raw surface that exemplifies Morino's refined, modern sensibility rooted in the Kyoto ceramic tradition. Comes with the original tomobako, inscribed "Unran Kabin" (Unran Vase), and the original signed cloth wrapper (tomonuno).
【Artist Profile】
Taimei Morino (b. 1934, Kyoto) is one of the most distinguished figures in contemporary Japanese ceramics. The son of the celebrated Kyoto potter Kako Morino, he studied under Kenkichi Tomimoto and Yuzo Kondo at Kyoto City University of Arts. He first exhibited at the prestigious Nitten exhibition in 1957 and won its top Hokuto Prize in 1960, before serving as a visiting instructor at the University of Chicago in the early 1960s. Over a career spanning more than six decades, Morino has received Japan's highest artistic honours, including the Japan Art Academy Prize (2007), membership in the Japan Art Academy itself (2010), the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Rays (2019), and recognition as a Person of Cultural Merit (2021). His work has been exhibited internationally at the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, among many others. His signature Unran glaze, seen here, is among his most celebrated and sought-after techniques.
