Dimensions: 19 × 17 × 17 cm
Large octagonal covered box, made of polychrome papier-mâché and varnished. The body is structured by rectangular panels outlined in red and black, each adorned with a stylized floral motif painted in red, white and green on a yellow ground enriched by a dense vegetal pattern.
The domed lid, particularly elaborated, is molded in several superimposed and scalloped registers evoking the opened petals of a lotus. Its apex is occupied by a large relief floral composition, organized around a central button. The red-orange borders that outline the different levels reinforce the architectural effect and the sculptural character of the whole.
The technique of painted and varnished papier-mâché as well as the floral repertoire place this piece close to productions from northern India, probably Kashmir, a region particularly renowned in the 19th century for its richly decorated papier-mâché objects. This box is distinguished, however, by its strongly pronounced modeling and by an intentionally expressive execution.

Good overall condition. Some wear and rubbing of the polychromy as well as the varnish, with chips, gaps and occasional losses. Interior showing signs of use. Complete with its lid and retaining a substantial portion of its original polychrome decoration.
