AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Beautiful, atmospheric oil painting of a classic Dutch peasant interior, painted and signed by the well-known artist Cornelis 'Kees' Terlouw (1890-1948). This intimate and beautifully lit work shows an older man with a hat, sitting in a traditional interior, attentively reading the newspaper by a burning stove. The painter has masterfully captured the mood of yesteryear with a keen sense of chiaroscuro (light-dark contrast). The incoming light through the window and the subtle glow from the hearth illuminate the details in the sober room wonderfully, such as the teapot on the table and the crockery in the cabinet.

Terlouw, during his Dutch period, was strongly influenced by the Hague School. This is clearly visible in the warm, naturalistic color palette and the looser, impressionistic brushstrokes with which the calm and simplicity of everyday life are captured.
