Antique Ludwig Wessel Rhein Vase – Ehrenfels Castle – Bonn-Poppelsdorf – c. 1875–1910 – 26 cm
Description:
Antique German earthenware vase manufactured by Steingutfabrik Ludwig Wessel, Bonn-Poppelsdorf, Germany, from the decorative “RHEIN” series.
The vase is richly decorated in blue and white with an extensive pattern of vine leaves and grape clusters. One of the principal medallions depicts Burg Ehrenfels, the historic castle ruin overlooking the Rhine near Rüdesheim. Other decorative medallions feature romantic and allegorical motifs.
The underside bears the characteristic blue “RHEIN” mark with crowned L.W. monogram, confirming manufacture by Ludwig Wessel. An impressed model number is also visible on the base.
The decoration is executed in a traditional transferware style typical of late 19th-century German historicist ceramics and reflects the popularity of Rhine landscape subjects during this period.
