Description from the seller

Navaneeta Krishna (Krishna with Butter)
Southern India
Mid-20th century
Silver, bronze and brass alloy
13 cm x 8 cm x 8 cm

This sculpture represents Navaneeta Krishna, the diminutive form of the god Krishna famed for his love of freshly churned butter. The divine child is depicted standing on a circular lotus-patterned base (padmapitha), triumphantly holding a ball of butter in each hand.

The deity is crowned with a bun topped by a fine floral ornament, a hairstyle characteristic of child representations in India. His smiling face features incised eyes and the tilak on the forehead. His plump body is adorned with many traditional jewels: carved necklaces, toe rings, armlets, dangly earrings hanging over the shoulders, and a belt decorated with a sacred cord.

The figurine is made using a bronze-brass assembly technique. The main figure presents a deep brown patina with lighter areas worn by ritual use.

The sculpture rests on an imposing stepped square base with molded cornices, engraved with geometric and floral motifs along the lower edge. At the back of the pedestal, two truncated vertical rods indicate the original presence of a mandorla or a glory arc (prabhavali) removable frame that once surrounded the deity.

Condition: Good overall.
Provenance: Kanaka The Collection, Portugal
