The Navajo (self-designation: Diné) are the second-largest Native American tribe in the USA and mainly inhabit a large reservation in the border area of Arizona, New Mexico and Utah. Their name derives from Spanish, while they refer to themselves as “the people.” They are known for their complex language, which during World War II served as an undecipherable code for secret messages, as well as for their traditional culture, which focuses on agriculture, animal husbandry (especially sheep), crafts (silver jewelry, weaving) and spirituality.

Offered is a hand-knotted blanket made circa 1960 by the Navajo Nation in North America.
The blanket is about 117 cm long and about 73 cm wide. One side shows color fading due to sun exposure.

Bekannt sind sie für ihre komplexe Sprache, die im Zweiten Weltkrieg als unentzifferbarer Code für geheime Botschaften diente, sowie für ihre traditionelle Kultur, die sich auf Landwirtschaft, Viehzucht (insbesondere Schafe), Handwerk (Silberschmuck, Weberei) und Spiritualität konzentriert.
