Description of the work
With NO BART, ArtHugo reclaims one of the most recognizable figures of popular culture and brings it into his Neo Pop Color universe.
The canvas features several interpretations of Bart Simpson in a deliberately loose, energetic, and almost instinctive composition. The character becomes a symbol of freedom, insolence, and defiance of conventions.
The gaze is immediately drawn to the bright yellows, pinks, reds, and blues, but the work reveals itself most fully only gradually. Behind the initial visual impact appear words, inscriptions, symbols, spontaneous strokes, and many small details embedded in the different layers of the composition.
ArtHugo thus blends the codes of pop art, comics, and street art with his own graphical language. The overlaps, deliberately free lines, and traces of gesture give the canvas its unique, artisanal character.
From a distance, NO BART functions as an instantly recognizable pop image. Upon closer approach, it reveals a far denser composition, in which the eye can continually discover new elements.
This tension between iconic character and personal interpretation, between humor and rebellion, between joyful colors and graphic energy, is at the heart of ArtHugo’s work.
He does not aim to simply reproduce a popular icon: he distorts, deconstructs, and reinterprets it to create a unique work bearing his own identity.
NO BART is an original 1/1 piece, handmade in the artist’s studio in Belgium.
About the artist
Hugo de Jesus Alves, aka ArtHugo, is a Belgian artist born in 1975. His artistic path developed in an atypical way, far from traditional academic routes.
Self-taught, he gradually develops his own visual language which he calls Neo Pop Color: a blend of pop art, popular culture, comics, street art, intense colors, words, and positive messages.
His principle is simple: no support should limit creation.
ArtHugo paints on canvas, but also transforms monumental sculptures, helmets, skateboards, guitars, and everyday objects into unique works. This desire to take art out of its traditional frame has become one of the signatures of his work.
Over the years, his universe has led him to present his work in Belgium and internationally, notably in Knokke, Brussels, Budapest, Vienna, and Dubai.
He has also created works related to motor racing and professional cycling, notably around Formula E, Formula 1, and Remco Evenepoel.
His work and career have drawn the attention of several Belgian media, with reports and appearances in the press, on television and radio. Several of these articles and photographs accompany this presentation to allow collectors to also discover the artist behind the work.
ArtHugo seeks above all to provoke an immediate reaction: a color that catches the eye, a character that recalls a memory, a detail that makes you smile, or a message you only discover after looking at the work for a while.
Each original work is created directly by ArtHugo in his studio in Belgium. The overlaps, inscriptions, spontaneous strokes, and small irregularities of handmade work deliberately form part of the identity of each piece.
For ArtHugo, art should not be distant or inaccessible. It must be alive, colorful, recognizable, and capable of conveying an emotion even before it is explained.
His signature and philosophy: “Let’s Pop It Up!”
