About the artist
Johanna Bendler, who works under the name Johanna B., was born in 1982 in Worms, Germany. Her work is instantly recognisable for its wild, torn, almost naive figures and shapes suspended in space — a visual language she's been developing since childhood, when she first started drawing and painting.
Since 1999, spray can work has become just as central to her practice as brush and canvas, and she typically combines the two with acrylic in a mixed-media approach. Her process is intuitive rather than planned, and each piece carries a strong emotional charge — you can feel her reading of the world, and her often critical eye on politics and people, coming through in the figures themselves.
Alongside her studio practice, Johanna works as a landscape gardener, a discipline she says sharpens her personal relationship with aesthetics and composition. She's also active as an art educator, teaching spray-paint and mixed-media courses to young people and running workshops in schools across the Worms region, alongside lecturing on art history. In 2020 she took part in the Art Exchange at Disturbers Studios in Portugal.
