A finely carved pair of bamboo scroll weights, executed with great attention to detail and embodying the refined craftsmanship associated with Qing dynasty scholar’s objects. Each paperweight is decorated in relief with a classic Longfeng (Dragon and Phoenix) motif. The dragon is depicted soaring above turbulent waves, while the phoenix appears amidst stylised clouds, creating a dynamic yet harmonious composition.

Together, these motifs represent the auspicious theme of “Longfeng Chengxiang” (Dragon and Phoenix bringing prosperity), symbolising imperial harmony, balance of yin and yang, and marital bliss. Such imagery was highly esteemed.

The upper sections are carved from richly toned bamboo, displaying a warm reddish-brown hue developed over time. Each is mounted on a dense hardwood base, likely zitan, joined by means of a traditional dovetail construction, demonstrating both technical sophistication and structural integrity.

One example bears a vertical inscription reading “Hong Ren Ke” (洪仁刻 – “Carved by Hong Ren”), accompanied by a seal mark. This signature may allude to the artistic lineage of early Qing masters and could reference, either directly or stylistically, the renowned monk-painter Hong Ren, reflecting the literati tradition of homage and artistic continuity.

Condition:
In good condition, with a natural age patina to both the bamboo and hardwood base. At one corner both bamboo inlays show warping due to shrinkage.
