Handmade - Dora Gong - Gong - Japan

This is an antique Japanese dora gong, estimated to be approximately 150–200 years old.

The gong has a substantial, thick body with extensive hammer marks visible across both surfaces. Although the surface has naturally aged and the marks made during its production have become somewhat worn over time, the distinctive texture created by traditional hand-hammering remains clearly visible.

The gong has a simple and rustic appearance, with a beautiful naturally aged patina developed over many years. The surface shows numerous traces of use and age, giving the piece an authentic character that would be difficult to reproduce on a modern reproduction.

The original-style hanging cord remains attached through the holes in the gong. A wooden mallet is also included. The mallet appears to have been made at a later date and should therefore be regarded as an accompanying accessory rather than necessarily belonging to the original gong.

When struck, the gong produces a deep and pleasant resonant sound.

A dora (銅鑼) is a traditional Japanese percussion instrument. In Japan, gongs have been used in various settings, including tea ceremony, Buddhist and religious ceremonies, performing arts, and as signals for departures. In the tea ceremony, the resonant sound of the dora has traditionally been used to signal participants and create a calm, contemplative atmosphere.

Gongs are believed to have ultimately originated from percussion instruments used in parts of Southeast Asia and were introduced to Japan through mainland Asia. In Japan, their use became closely associated with traditional culture, including tea ceremony, and gong-making also developed in Kanazawa as the tea tradition flourished.

With its substantial thickness, extensive hammer marks, and naturally aged surface, this gong has a particularly authentic and rustic character. It is not only an interesting example of traditional Japanese craftsmanship, but also a functional antique that can still be enjoyed by striking it with the included mallet.
