Description from the seller

Large Portuguese wall panel in glazed ceramic, composed of 24 & 16 hand-painted tiles (6 × 4), presumably produced in Portugal and executed in the traditional blue-and-white azulejo style.

Object description

Beautiful large decorative wall panel, assembled from 24 & 16 hand-painted glazed earthenware tiles (6 × 4), likely manufactured in Portugal and carried out in the traditional blue-and-white azulejo style.

The panel shows an alternating composition of graceful floral motifs in various blue tones. Each decorated tile has its own individual floral depiction and is combined with more calmly executed tiles. Small stylized corner ornaments visually connect the individual tiles into one harmonious whole.

The decoration aligns with the Portuguese tradition of so-called figura avulsa azulejos: tiles with separate, standalone motifs. The blue-and-white execution shows the clear historical influence of Dutch/Delft tile decorations.

The floral motifs are hand-applied and display differences in line work, brushstroke, and color intensity, giving each decorated tile its own character.

Along the panel edges, red- to brown-fired ceramic shard is visible at several places. The combination of this shard, the glaze finish, and the decoration style supports an Iberian and presumably Portuguese origin. A specific maker or workshop has not been identified.

The 24 and 16 tiles are firmly mounted on a wooden backing board. On the reverse there are metal mounting brackets, allowing the large panel to be presented as a complete wall object.

Condition

Good used vintage condition, appropriate for age and material.

Glazed earthenware tiles on wooden backboard.
Hand-painted blue floral decorations.
Small natural variations in painting and glaze.
Locally light edge and usage marks.
On some outer edges red/brown-fired ceramic shard is visible.
Wooden backboard with metal mounting brackets.
Normal light signs of aging and wear.

The tiles are mounted and the individual backs are therefore not visible or inspected separately.

The photos form an integral part of the description and give an accurate impression of the decoration, execution, and condition.
