Description from the seller

CHANEL × KARL LAGERFELD

Cruise Collection 1996–1997

Complete original portfolio with 25 photographs/photolithographs – Photography by Karl Lagerfeld – Original CHANEL folder

An extraordinary and today still rarely completely preserved CHANEL portfolio from the legendary Karl Lagerfeld era:

CHANEL BOUTIQUE – COLLECTION CROISIÈRE 1996–1997

The portfolio documents the Croisière collection 1996–1997 of the House of CHANEL and contains all 25 photographs/photolithographs of the series.

What is especially fascinating: The images were taken by Karl Lagerfeld himself.

The original CHANEL document explicitly states:

“PHOTOGRAPHIE PAR KARL LAGERFELD”

Thus, this ensemble is far more than a classic fashion portfolio. It unites CHANEL, Karl Lagerfeld, fashion history and photography in a single, tightly preserved archival object from the 1990s.

KARL LAGERFELD × CHANEL

Karl Lagerfeld took over the creative direction of CHANEL’s fashion in 1983 and shaped the house’s aesthetics for decades.

In addition to his work as a fashion designer and Creative Director, Lagerfeld developed a significant passion for photography and shot many of his campaigns and collections himself.

The present portfolio is a wonderful example of this connection:

Lagerfeld stages and photographs the CHANEL world, which he himself helped to shape.

The 25 motifs convey the unmistakable atmosphere of CHANEL fashion of the 1990s – elegant black-and-white photographs meet intense color compositions, fashion, jewelry and accessories.

COLLECTION CROISIÈRE 1996–1997

The Croisière – internationally also called Cruise Collection – developed into an important part of CHANEL’s collections.

This portfolio already comes from 1996/1997 and thus documents an early phase of the Croisière history under Karl Lagerfeld, even before CHANEL established Cruise presentations as regularly staged fashion shows from 2000/2001 onward.

Today, the world of CHANEL Cruise Collections is among the best-known and internationally particularly noted presentations of the house.

That is why this early document from the 1990s has a special historical appeal.

COMPLETE – ALL 25 MOTIVES

The particular strength of this copy lies in its completeness.

Included are:

* 25 of 25 photographs/photolithographs
* complete numbered image sequence
* original overview/contact sheet with all 25 motifs
* original information sheet “CHANEL BOUTIQUE – COLLECTION CROISIÈRE 1996–1997”
* note “Photographie par Karl Lagerfeld”
* historical international directory of the then CHANEL boutiques
* original large-format CHANEL portfolio folder
* embossed CHANEL double-C
* large black CHANEL lettering
* original black securing ribbons

Folder format: about 43 × 32 cm

An almost 30-year-old CHANEL archive ensemble that is still preserved today in its complete original arrangement.

RARE AND AUCTION MARKET

That these portfolios are by no means guaranteed to be complete today is shown by earlier auctions.

At the renowned Dorotheum in Vienna, in 2021, a specimen of the CHANEL Collection Croisière 1996–1997 was auctioned, in which already 5 of the originally 25 photolithographs were missing – the ensemble consisted of only 20 sheets.

Despite the incompleteness, this specimen achieved an auction price of €3,200.

The portfolio offered here, by contrast, is characterized by its complete preservation with all 25 motifs as well as the associated original documents and the CHANEL folder.

VERY GOOD TO EXCELLENT CONDITION

The entire ensemble, given its age of nearly 30 years, is in a very good to excellent state of preservation.

The individual photographs/photolithographs present themselves overall very nicely and are superbly preserved.

As with an authentic archival object of this age, some sheets may show slight age-related signs of use, minimal storage traces, or small irregularities.

The original CHANEL folder also shows minor age-related signs of use and storage traces as well as isolated light patina or small stains.

These traces are commensurate with the age and do not detract from the exceptionally beautiful overall impression of the portfolio.

Nothing has been restored or polished deliberately. The authentic original state has been preserved.

Please examine all high-resolution photographs carefully. The images are explicitly part of the condition description and document the actual state of the offered ensemble.

A DREAM FOR INTERIOR AND COLLECTORS

Beyond its character as a complete CHANEL archive object, this portfolio has an extraordinary decorative quality.

The individual Karl Lagerfeld images are excellent for professional framing with generous matting.

Especially impressive is a presentation in elegant black, white, or high-quality aluminum frames.

Arranging several motifs together can form a spectacular, nearly gallery-like wall installation – ideal for a high-end loft, a penthouse, a dressing area, an office, a showroom, a boutique, or a modern design interior.

It is precisely the mix of black-and-white photography and selected color images that possesses a timeless elegance, which still looks strikingly modern almost 30 years after its creation.

What remains crucial:

All 25 works belong together and together form the complete historical CHANEL portfolio.

CHANEL. LAGERFELD. PHOTOGRAPHY. FASHION HISTORY.

With this ensemble, several significant collecting areas intersect:

CHANEL – one of the most famous fashion houses in the world.
Karl Lagerfeld – one of the most influential fashion designers of his generation.
Photography by Karl Lagerfeld himself.
Collection Croisière 1996–1997.
All 25 motifs.
Original CHANEL folder and accompanying materials.
Very good to excellent condition with only minor age-related traces.
An extraordinary time document from the great Karl Lagerfeld era of CHANEL – and at the same time a portfolio of enormous visual presence.

For CHANEL collectors.
For Karl Lagerfeld collectors.
For lovers of historic fashion photography.
And for people who, in a demanding interior, are not simply looking for decoration but an authentic piece of fashion history.
