Description from the seller
Belle Doxx – “Ni Dieu, Ni Maître” – Original mixed media on canvas
An original and unique artwork by the Dutch contemporary artist Belle Doxx. In Ni Dieu, Ni Maître Doxx combines her recognizable raw visual language with philosophical texts, symbolism and figurative elements.
Centred in the composition is a deformed, almost skull-like figure with a realistically depicted eye. Around it appear drawn eyes, graphic structures and handwritten texts. The French words “Ni Dieu, Ni Maître” form a powerful starting point for the work and place themes such as autonomy, freedom and resistance to imposed authority at the center.
Text fragments such as “Freedom is having nothing to fear from”, “I see through all your lies”, “Dry Tears” and “Almost There” give the painting a personal, almost diary-like dimension. Doxx uses words not merely as captions, but as fully-fledged visual components of the composition.
The subdued gray color palette reinforces the raw appearance of the work. Precisely because of the limited color scheme, the black lines, typography and the central eye gain extra emphasis. The result sits at the crossroads of urban contemporary, neo-expressionism and street art.
