Tray - Manganese - Art Deco

Grand molded glass Art Deco plateau in violet tint, of unidentified manufacture, dating presumably from the interwar period. Because of its generous proportions, its elegant violet hue, and especially the highly graphic construction of its ornament, this piece fully embodies the Art Deco taste for stylized, geometric, radiant forms. The large footed glass plates are, moreover, a characteristic category of table arts from this period, where molding allowed the creation of complex decorative compositions while keeping production relatively accessible.

The plateau presents a wide circular shape with a delicately wavy contour, almost polylobed, resting on a slender central foot. Its surface is structured around a circular center composed of several concentric rings, from which long relief ribs radiate to the edge. These ribs, particularly clean and stretched, give the plate an appearance reminiscent of stylized flower petals or sun rays, while creating remarkable plays of light within the thickness of the glass. The underside repeats and accentuates this radial organization, while the foot, with a slightly faceted cross-section, gradually flares to a broad circular base. The beautiful violet tint, deeper in the thick parts, elegantly emphasizes the reliefs and the architectural construction of the whole.

The plate is in excellent condition. The glass remains perfectly glossy and the reliefs are sharp. No major chips, cracks, or restorations to report. Only some superficial cutlery marks on the upper face, consistent with old use as a serving piece. These marks are discreet and do not alter the overall appearance of this important decorative piece.

Although the maker of this model cannot be identified with certainty, its design testifies to the craftsmanship reached by European glass works in the field of Art Deco molded glass. The search for a strong sculptural presence, achieved here solely through form, relief, and color of the glass, perfectly illustrates the modern aesthetics of the era. An elegant testament to the 1920s-1930s taste for table objects that are both functional and truly decorative.
