Large Polish Silver-Plated Bowl Attributed to Norblin i Ska, Warsaw, c. 1895–1910

A large and exceptionally decorative Polish silver-plated two-handled bowl, attributed to Norblin i Ska, Warsaw, circa 1895–1910.

Of substantial oval form, the bowl is raised on three elaborate paw-shaped feet and fitted with two broad, scrolling side handles terminating in decorative volutes. The body and interior are richly worked with an extensively hammered and textured surface, producing a highly distinctive irregular cellular effect which catches the light across the entire vessel.

The underside bears a surviving “SKA” mark together with additional impressed marks, consistent with the marking tradition of Norblin i Ska (Norblin & Co.), Warsaw, one of the most important Polish manufacturers of silver-plated wares during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The form, construction, decorative treatment and surviving marks are strongly suggestive of the firm’s production.

The bowl is apparently silver-plated over a base metal, probably brass, rather than being manufactured in solid silver. Areas of wear and loss to the silver plating reveal the underlying metal, particularly to the exterior, feet and other exposed areas.

A striking and substantial example of late 19th/early 20th-century Polish decorative silver plate, combining an unusually bold hammered finish with elaborate historicist/early Art Nouveau-inspired handles and feet.

Condition: Fair to good antique condition. Significant wear and loss to the silver plating consistent with age and use, with areas of exposed underlying metal.
